Acupuncture

Musculoskeletal & Sports Injury  | Women’s Health/Fertility  |  Stress Reduction

Acupuncture therapy involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body. The process of inserting these tiny needles stimulates muscle and nerve activity, relaxing muscles, reducing pain, and improving local blood flow. Acupuncture is beneficial for any sort of joint/ muscle pain: reducing arthritic pain, speeding up healing of muscle strains, sprains and sports injuries, and alleviating back pain, neck pain, or migraine. In the area of women’s health, acupuncture is beneficial for conditions such as endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), menstrual cramps, as well as enhancing ovarian/ uterine function and improving fertility. Acupuncture can be used alongside other fertility treatments and medications. Many people also find acupuncture effective in calming the nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety, and promoting restful sleep.

Acupuncture therapy has been practiced for thousands of years as part of traditional Chinese medicine. The Chinese believed that acupuncture regulates the flow of energy or “Qi” through meridians or channels on the body. Today, Western medicine has shown that acupuncture points lie near nerve pathways and impact nerve impulse activity. In this way, acupuncture regulates the activity of muscles, the nervous system, blood flow parameters, and specific organ activity. For instance, in treating fertility, acupuncture can improve the function of the ovaries and uterus, increasing blood flow to these organs and thereby increasing delivery of nutrients and removal of waste products. Most people are surprised to learn that acupuncture involves minimal discomfort, yet may yield profound results.
